Prior to its special night opening, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, which has been undergoing "Heisei no Daishuri," or the Heisei Period full renovation, conducted a test illumination of its precincts on March 24. Visitors can experience a different atmosphere than usual as the entire cypress bark roof of the main hall is being renewed for the first time in half a century and is encircled with logs for the construction.

The major renovation began in 2008 and five buildings among the nine buildings targeted for repair, including the "Koyasu-no-to" pagoda and the "Asakura-do" hall have already been completed. Assembly of the scaffolding and temporary roof to cover the main temple has been underway since this February.

In the test light-up, the main building was illuminated behind the hundreds of logs set up using traditional techniques. The main temple will be covered with the temporary roof and tarpaulins in June and repairs will be completed by March, 2020.

The special evening opening will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (last entry) between March 25 and April 9. There is an admission fee.
