Enjoy Night Cherry Blossoms along the Kamo River, Kyoto
4 April 2017 - Kyoto//Sightseeing/EventsAn event to illuminate cherry trees lined up along a 1.8-kilometer stretch of the left bank of the Kamo River between Oike Street and Gojo Street began on March 25. A group that regularly cleans up the river and other local organizations planned the event to enhance public awareness of the river's aesthetic appearance. This is the first illumination on the Kamo River in eight years. The event organizer said, "We hope everyone enjoys beautiful night cherry blossoms."Photo= The Kamo River's left bank developed as a floral path by Kyoto Prefectural Government. The event is hosted by an executive committee composed of six groups, including a group for the Kamo River's beautification, Kyoto Kamogawa Lions Club and others. In 1999, Kyoto Prefectural Government developed the left bank of the Kamo River between Sanjo Street and Shichijo Street as "Hana no Kairo," or floral path, around which the event takes place.
Approximately 160 cherry trees, including Somei-Yoshino cherry, weeping cherry and others, are illuminated by LED lights. According to the executive committee, this is the first illumination on the Kamo River since the illumination between Kitayama Street and Kitaoji Street in 2009.
The executive committee said, "We would like visitors to appreciate the magnificence of the heritage called the Kamo River, by enjoying the night cherry blossoms." The illumination will continue until April 15, from sunset to 9:30 p.m. It will be cancelled in case of inclement weather.
