"Biwako-no-Mieru-Oka," the observation area of Hakodateyama Ski Resort in Hiokimae, Imazu-cho, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, is open to the public even during the winter season. Its vast panoramic view of Lake Biwa resting beyond a silver world is gaining popularity.

The Biwako-no-Mieru-Oka hill is 630 meters above sea level and was opened at the end of last June. It was decided to keep it open also in winter thanks to feedback about it being a great spot from which visitors can casually enjoy a mountainous resort atmosphere.

Transformed from the greenery of summer, the hill is covered in pure, white snow. If the weather is clear, the townscape along the lake and Chikubushima Island floating off the coast can be seen from the hill. Also, visitors can view the snow-covered Ibukiyama Mountain on the opposite side of the lake. The adjoining shop sells hot food, including marshmallows and cheese roasted over a bonfire, adding more excitement to the snowy mountain mood.

According to the ski resort, "Many visitors are skiers or families who want to play in the snow, but there are some people coming to experience the splendid landscape from the hill." Admission is free, but there is a charge for the gondola to the hilltop. The winter season opening will continue until March 24.
