January 20, 2022 was "Dai-kan," or the coldest day of the year, according to the 24 solar terms of the old calendar. Japanese macaques look like "monkey dumplings" as they huddle close for warmth in the cold at Sandanike RAVIHOUSE Zoo, formally the Fukuchiyama City Zoo, Izaki, Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture.

About 30 Japanese macaques live at "Saru-ga-shima," and snow, which has been rare in recent years, has accumulated on the ground. The macaques' winter coats have grown in and their fluffy bodies sit snuggly together. Visitors can't help but smile as they enjoy this winter tradition.
