Kyoto festival parade to return after 2-yr lull amid pandemic
13 July 2022 - Kyoto//Sightseeing/EventsThe "Jidai Matsuri" (Festival of the Ages), one of the city's three main festivals, was first held in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the foundation of Kyoto as the ancient capital of Japan.
The annual festival features a procession of people dressed in costumes from almost every period of Japanese history.
But the parade was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the spread of coronavirus infections, with only rituals held at Heian Jingu Shrine, the end point of the procession.
The two other main festivals in Kyoto are the Aoi and Gion festivals.
