Hideyoshi's Dream Expressed with Light
Special Evening Opening at Kodaiji Temple6 March 2013 - Sightseeing/EventsPrior to its spring special evening opening, an illumination test was held at Kodaiji Temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, on March 6. The rock garden was lit up by brightly-colored blue and green lights, and the heroic waterfalls, which are expressed with rocks, emerged from the darkness.
Approximately 670 lights were set up in the precincts. With the theme of "Yumemiruhito," or dreamers, a 1.3-meter-high male waterfall and a smaller female waterfall were arranged in Hashin-tei Garden located before the main hall, and running water was expressed using white LEDs. The garden shows the dream of a unified Japan cherished by Hideyoshi Toyotomi and his lawful wife, Nene, who is also known as Kita no Mandokoro, the founder of Kodaiji Temple.
The special evening opening is from March 8 to May 6. Admission hours are from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and the temple gate closes at 10:00 p.m. The adjacent Entoku-in Temple's precincts are also illuminated. There is an admission fee.
