Cherry Blossom Announcement in Kyoto
Six Days Earlier than Usual22 March 2013 - Sightseeing/EventsOn the morning of March 22, the Kyoto Local Meteorological Observatory announced that "Someiyoshino" cherry flowers have come into bloom in Kyoto City. The blossom announcement was six days earlier than an average year and 12 days earlier than last year due to the continuous warm days in March.
Meteorologists verified five or six cherry flowers on sample trees in Nijo Castle in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, as one of the standards for the blossom announcement.
Although the morning was severely cold with a low of 0.6 degrees, it turned into a fine day with the temperature rising to 15.1 degrees at noon.
In Nijo Castle, tourists and students on school trips gazed at the flowers, which have just started to blossom under the spring sunshine.
According to the Meteorological Observatory, chilly days are not expected at the end of this month and the cherry blossoms will be at their peak in a week to ten days.
