Unexpected Combination Gains Popularity
Salt-Grilled Sweetfish Hot Dog at Kyoto Aquarium14 August 2013 - GourmetKyoto Aquarium, in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, is selling "Ayu no Shioyaki Dog," or a hot dog with a whole salt-grilled sweetfish. The unexpected combination of sweetfish and a bread roll has drawn wide public attention.
The hot dog was developed for the special exhibition on the sweetfish in the manga, "Tsurikichi Sanpei," which describes the growth of a fisher boy. The well-salted sweetfish is served with garlic-powdered lotus root chips and goes nicely with beer.
Originally targeting men, many women interested in this unusual way of eating summer food often make orders. Some days more than 200 are sold. One hot dog costs 500 yen. They will be served until September 1.
