Special Exhibition of Ornamental Metal Fittings at Nijo Castle
Excellent Craftsmanship in Edo Period2 November 2013 - Sightseeing/EventsA special exhibition of ornamental metal fittings started on November 2 at the Nijo Castle 400th Anniversary Gallery, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto. The ornaments are usually used at the National Treasure Ninomaru Palace, and include "kugikakushi," or ornaments to conceal nail heads, and "hikite," or door pulls for sliding doors.
The seven displayed metalwork pieces, which are usually attached in the main hall and other rooms, are decorated with several patterns, such as phoenix, peony, and chrysanthemum. There are also a couple of magnifying glasses available, so visitors can be seen closely examining the pieces to view the exquisite craftsmanship of the Edo Period.
"These artifacts are first-class masterpieces. We would like many people to be able to see the expression of the kugikakushi nail-head concealers, which are usually used in much higher places, and the excellent skills of the craftsmen," said the Nijo Castle office. The exhibition lasts till December 1. The admission fee for elementary school students or older is 100 yen in addition to the entrance fee for the castle.
