New Guinness World Record for Largest Arms-linked Toast
401 Pairs with Sake in Otesuji Shopping District, Fushimi18 November 2013 - Local topicsAn attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest arms-linked toast with sake was made on November 17 in the Otesuji shopping district, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto. A new record was brilliantly set when 802 participants, divided into 401 pairs, made a toast at the same time, with each pair standing face to face with their arms linked.
This new record significantly surpassed the previous World Record which was set by 440 people in 220 pairs in China last July.
This attempt was hosted by the shopping district's promotion association, which is located in Fushimi, a famous sake-producing area, for the purpose of publicizing a city ordinance to promote toasting with sake, regional development, and more.
In the presence of an official Guinness World Records adjudicator, shopping district members and participants from the general public formed an approximately 100-meter long line, and at the cry of "Kanpai!," or cheers, simultaneously gulped down small cups of sake. The record achievement was confirmed on the spot, and the certificate was awarded. At the site filled with joy, a company employee from Osaka City, who participated with her four friends, said, "The success filled me with deep emotion. This sake tasted better than what I usually drink."
