A candy house made by students of Shiga Junior College, in Tatsugaoka, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, has been completed and is on exhibit in the lobby of the Otsu Prince Hotel, located at Nionohama 4-chome, Otsu City. The Christmas-inspired design delights the eyes of visitors.

It was made by "Bakery Juku," a club for studying bread and sweets which was created by students in the Confectionery-meister Course of the Department of Human Environmental Science at Shiga Junior College. Students in this course make candy houses for class every year. This is the first time to create a large-scale project, which was done at the request of the Otsu Prince Hotel. A team consisting mainly of nine sophomore students spent approximately one month working on it.

There are two houses on a cookie foundation that measures 90 centimeters in length and 1.5 meters in width. The larger house is 80 centimeters tall. Approximately 30 kilograms of flour, 40 kilograms of sugar and 100 eggs were used. Its theme is "the wedding of Santa Claus and a witch." A joyous mood was created by creating three-dimensional figures of a Santa Claus groom and a witch bride, rabbits and pigs playing musical instruments, food, flowers and so on, out of a mixture of sugar and almond powder.

One sophomore student, who comes from Aoji-cho, Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture, said, "Although it was hard to create this candy house due to the detailed work and lack of time, we were able to achieve the image we wanted."

The exhibition will continue until December 26. There is no charge.
