Steam Locomotive Glitters for Christmas Eve
Sagano Scenic Railway14 December 2013 - Sightseeing/EventsThe Sagano Scenic Railway, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, began "Torokko de Kurismas," or Christmas on the tram, on December 13 for the passengers enjoyment of Christmas. The Christmas mood has been enlivened by decorating the Steam Locomotive at Saga Torokko Station and the interior of the tram with warm-colored lights, and the staff has dressed in Santa Claus attire as they see the tram off.
The event was planned for the first time to counteract the slump in passengers during the winter off-season after the passing of the autumn foliage season. "Kyoto Arashiyama Hanatouro," or an event to illuminate the Saga Arashiyama region with lanterns, will also take place from December 14 to 23. The railway company is promoting the tram, saying, "We would like tourists to enjoy the illumination at night, and the tram during the day."
On the evening of December 13, illumination of the D-51 type steam locomotive displayed in front of Saga Torokko Station with blue, red and white LED lights began. In the morning, there was also an event where employees dressed in Santa costumes saw off the first train, which departed at 9:07 a.m. from the station.
The interior of the tram is also decorated with lights. A woman from Kunitachi City, Tokyo, happily said, "The beautiful illumination allowed me to enjoy the Christmassy air even in the tunnel where nothing could be seen from the windows."
On December 23 and 24, a "Christmas present" of original goods will be given to passengers. There is no service on December 18 and 25.
